Holy Thursday

Holy Thursday
There is only one Mass celebrated on Holy Thursday - the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper. The Scriptures proclaimed remind us of the first Passover meal of the Israelites as they prepare for their journey out of slavery in Egypt. We watch as Jesus shares His last Passover meal with His friends. We listen once again to the narrative of the institution of the Eucharist, and His command to "Do this, in remembrance of me." We see Him wash the feet of His disciples and hear Him speak: "What I have done was to give you an example: You, too, must do the same…" The ceremony of the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday is a sign and symbol of the service to which we all are called.

We are not called to salvation alone - but together as one people. Part of the Holy Thursday celebration is the reception of the blessed oils. The oils used in our parishes throughout the year are received at the Chrism Mass, a special mass held on Holy Thursday at every cathedral and presided over by the bishop. Representatives from each parish are present at the Chrism Mass, and receive the oils, blessed by the bishop. These are brought back to the parish and presented at the evening Mass - a sign of our unity in faith and common call to service.

The Mass of the Lord's Supper ends in silence; there is no closing procession because our celebration has not ended. We are invited to "stay awhile" and keep watch with Christ in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as we prepare for Good Friday.
